“All the toys go back where they are supposed to go at the end,” he writes. It also doesn’t leave time for further character development, any form of nuance, or even a moment’s reflection on the passing of an age.īut for Jordan Hoffman at The Guardian, one of few critics to outright rave about the film, the sprawling plots and wandering characters tie up neatly. The gasping pace doesn’t leave much time for contemplating plot holes, or noticing that the stakes feel lighter than ever, even though in theory, entire planets are on the line. In fact, it’s so busy that maybe you won’t notice the plot holes, writes Tasha Robinson at Polygon.

The least possible amount of character development happens (except in one oddly shallow case), mostly because the movie - which clocks in at about two hours and 20 minutes - is designed as a chain of successfully completed quests. “While lots of things occur, very little actually happens,” writes Alissa Wilkinson at Vox. But it would make for a deeper and more powerful lesson - one that, after nine movies, might leave a lasting dent in the heart - if the hero actually had to give up something, or someone, that didn’t feel like a tiniest bit of a cop-out.ĭavid Edelstein at Vulture says the film “hits its marks and bashes ahead, so speedy that no emotion sinks in too deeply.”įor all its storytelling glitches and cornball dialogue, “The Rise of Skywalker” has the kind of gung-ho inspirational spirit that must have elated the Disney Company after the sour response to “The Last Jedi.” It’s a dream movie for them - it’s the first “Star Wars” film that feels like it comes from Disney - as I’m guessing it’s a nightmare for George Lucas. It’s fine, if also cliché, to be reminded that good will triumph over evil. But that doesn’t mean that we should always get the one we want. On the other, it may not be the closure this epic, now 42 years in the making, deserves. The movie “panders wildly,” writes Michael O’Sullivan at The Washington Post. In its anxiety not to offend, it comes off more like fan fiction than the creation of actual professional filmmakers. Stephanie Zacharek at Time calls it an “overloaded finale” for “everybody and nobody”: So what went wrong? And what, despite everything, is still right? We’ve broken down some of the critics’ thoughts here - and before you whine, there are no spoilers, though we wonder what you’re doing here if you’re worried about that. It had a score of 53 at Metacritic, the other main review site. As of Thursday morning, the film had a 58 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on its aggregation of critics’ reviews. This week, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” the ninth film in a trilogy of trilogies, hits theaters, and fans and critics have begun sharing their reviews. So instead you’re probably wondering, “When I walk out of the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, will I feel exuberant, or will I feel as if I’ve just forked over $12 to have someone besmirch my precious childhood memories, again?”įans of the franchise - that is, fans of pop culture writ large - have over the decades experienced both feelings to varying degrees. No, if you clicked on this, you’re almost definitely going to see the new “Star Wars” movie. you will want to go home and watch 'a new hope' right after seeing 'revenge of the sith'.The question you’re facing right now isn’t, “Will I go see the new ‘Star Wars’ movie?”
the sense of disconnect that people felt with episodes 1 and 2 is gone. it's great entertainment, and it ties in very well with episodes 4-6. nevertheless, for most of the audience, even non hard-core star wars believers, this movie works. there are weak moments, there is wooden dialog, there's cheesy romance. this movie carries a lot more weight than episodes 1 and 2.
the conflicts are complex, personalities are multifaceted. the transformation of the characters came across well. there were quiet, slow paced moments that made sense, felt right.

the movie is full of fireworks, but they always support the progression of the story, nothing felt unnecessary like some stuff in the earlier episodes. 'sith' has a coherent story, well told, well paced.
i was surprised to see that things really come together. i grew disenchanted with the new trilogy.
